Emergency Chicken Drinkers

Postby Meekle on Wed Jul 28, 2010 7:28 am

If, like me, you go off to a market with the intention of "just looking" and then on the way back you are thinking of cunning and ingenious excuses for your family as to why you have a boot full of poultry, the thought may escape your mind (until you get them home) about drinkers and feeders for the new arrivals. The odds are that when you get them home and settled you havent got time to run to the feed store. What do you do?

well, we get an empty 2ltr plastic milk carton and wash it out thoroughly. then with the handle side facing away from you, cut a horizontal slit across the carton - usually about where the label finishes and the square bit starts to taper. we cut about half way through then turn the knife upwards and cut towards the lid at the top for about 2", then bring the knife back again towards the front to complete the hole. then, using the handle, attach it to the run wire using a zip tie or string. fill with either water or feed and you have a handy little pot feeder that will get you by in an emergency.

Some cartons you may need to tie in two places to stop the little b*ggers from twisting it and spilling water/feed on the floor.

i will try and get a photo later to illustrate the point. i only mention this today as its wednesday - hence market day and i can resist everything except temptation!

I do this as well - for grit feeders too. They also make good containers with a handle for when you're picking berries.
