Hi Russell.

My young legbar, now 18 weeks old, has been out of salts the last 2 days. Usually she's the first in everything but she seems very quite, and unstaple on her legs. She's make a crocking noise and keeps trying to put her head under the wing of our much bigger Sussex. It's been suggested she may have a slightly blocked crop, and we have tried to shift any blockage by stroking and also natural live youghurt (on same suggestion). She's eating and drinking but really not herself at all.

Hi Ruth,

I suppose crop inpaction is the most likely cause of the problem if no other birds are involved and it has had access to rough dry herbage. You might be able to feel if the crop is full or not. If you think it is then isolating and starving with water only for 48 hours may be the answer. It may also have a crop infection which would require a visit to the vet for the appropriate diagnosis and medication. It could of course may some other reason such as Aspergillosis but this unlikely in this hot dry weather. Another thought is when did you last deworm the bird? If in doubt see your vet
Trust this helps a little

Thanks Russell.

I'm going to isolate from tomorrow - she is in with larger birds who are on layers - I wondered if this had caused a problem?

Might be that presume not out on long grass to get impaction. Slightly worried it might be Gapes. If not improving deworm

Hi Russell. I took her in to work today as their is a poultry judge who works on the farm. Not crop compact. Likely worms possibly gape as you suggested. Although she is small and weak she is feeding herself and I'm bulking her up as well as treating her (and the rest) for worms.
